198: From Surviving to Thriving: Self-Actualization as a Tool for Black First-Generation Evaluators
Wednesday, November 12, 2025
5:30 PM - 7:00 PM CST
Black first-generation evaluators navigate complex professional landscapes where implicit norms, systemic barriers, and isolation often hinder their ability to fully engage and lead. These challenges not only impact individual career trajectories but also limit the field of evaluation’s ability to benefit from diverse perspectives and leadership approaches. This session invites participants into a collaborative dialogue to explore how Black first-gen evaluators can cultivate leadership, build community, and thrive while maintaining cultural authenticity—strengthening the evaluation field in the process. Rooted in Black feminist thought and guided by Maslow’s extended Hierarchy of Needs, this session will explore self-actualization as a tool for professional growth, leadership development, and shared knowledge creation. Participants will engage in reflective discussions on navigating professional spaces, addressing imposter syndrome, and co-creating strategies for success. By centering lived experiences, this session fosters a participatory space where attendees will collectively identify challenges and propose actionable solutions for strengthening leadership pathways.
