The 1987 Brundtland Report emphasized sustainable development as meeting present needs without compromising future generations. Sustainability integrates economic, social, and environmental dimensions, influencing sectors like agriculture. The U.S. Midwest, a highly productive agricultural region, has witnessed extensive technological advancements, including agrochemicals, engineering, and biological modifications, enhancing productivity but threatening long-term sustainability. To restore harmony with nature and ensure resilient agriculture, I explore four key strategies: agroecology, conservation agriculture, agroforestry, and regenerative agriculture, as approaches to enhance resilience while fostering a sustainable connection between humans and nature. However, despite extensive research, little attention has been paid to their interaction when implemented together. I employ a systems thinking strategy to develop conceptual models illustrating the structure of each conservation method and identifying key leverage points. Causal loop diagrams will assess ecosystem services, evaluate conservation interventions, and propose integrated solutions for sustainable land management in the Midwest and globally.
