279: Voices from the Ground: Integrating Indigenous Perspectives in African Evaluation Frameworks
Wednesday, November 12, 2025
5:30 PM - 7:00 PM CST
This presentation explores the integration of Indigenous perspectives into evaluation frameworks, drawing insights from the Ogiek and Mijikenda communities in Kenya. The study, conducted under the EvalIndigenous Global Network’s "Project Blossoming 2024–2025”, employed ethnographic and participatory action research approaches to collaboratively develop culturally responsive methodologies. Findings highlight the central role of elders and traditional decision-making processes rooted in values such as harmony, environmental stewardship, and accountability. Storytelling and oral traditions emerged as vital tools for preserving cultural identity, teaching moral values, and fostering social cohesion. Success metrics identified by these communities prioritize tangible benefits, cultural relevance, inclusivity, and sustainability—contrasting conventional evaluation indicators. Challenges such as land tenure insecurity, cultural erosion, and lack of representation underscore the need for inclusive solutions. This presentation advocates for culturally aligned evaluation practices that honour Indigenous knowledge systems while addressing systemic barriers to equitable development.
