This presentation tells the story of a research study: the Washington LGBTQ+ Survey sponsored by the Washington LGBTQ Commission, from 2023-25. The Washington State University-led research team designed and administered a comprehensive statewide survey of LGBTQIA2S+ people across all 39 counties and captured responses from 6,800 people, ages 11-98 years. This initiative is important for all evaluators and researchers who want to be allies and share leadership in the protection and survival of LGBTQIA2S+ people across the country. The study’s purpose is to help the Washington state LGBTQ+ Commission make recommendations to policymakers and lawmakers regarding the needs of the LGBTQIA2S+ community. This is also a story of data and research justice where the research has been conducted by and with LGBTQIA2S+ folx, to ensure that the data is owned by community members who can use it for advocacy, strategic planning, program development, fundraising, and community self-determination.
