The Gaps We Left: Understanding the Hidden Impact of Incomplete Evaluations

Despite their best efforts, evaluators sometimes leave evaluations incomplete. Various factors contribute to these discontinuations, from internal organizational conflicts and communication breakdowns to a hostile socio-political climate. However, these unfinished evaluations—the questions left unasked and the stories untold—carry hidden consequences for organizations and communities. This session explores the context and impact of incomplete evaluations, drawing from qualitative data gathered from evaluators, organizational leaders, and community members. It examines the key barriers preventing evaluators from completing their work and the short- and long-term effects of these discontinuations. By shedding light on these challenges, this paper aims to inform evaluators about lessons learned, strategies employed, and ways to navigate obstacles in their efforts to serve communities more effectively.
