Applying a meta-analysis protocol to Needs Assessments: Findings and insights from Vermont's early childhood systems

Building Bright Futures (BBF), Vermont’s Early Childhood State Advisory Council, recently completed a required early childhood systems needs assessment (NA). BBF was aware of many other NAs conducted by early childhood organizations. Therefore, BBF conducted a qualitative meta-analysis of existing NAs. Partners were asked to share relevant NAs. A total of 26 NAs were shared with BBF, 12 of which fit the inclusion criteria. Upon review of the NAs, a total of 10 key needs were identified. In addition, the meta-analysis confirmed what was suspected - that the most prominent needs were already well-documented by pre-existing efforts. This methodology can help organizations reduce costs, duplication, and survey fatigue by capitalizing on existing data sources. Future applications and implications of utilizing AI to implement the protocol will be discussed.
