58: When Data Doesn't Tell the Whole Story: The Role of Intuition in Evaluation
Friday, November 14, 2025
12:30 PM - 1:30 PM CST
Using intuition or “gut feelings” challenges conventional beliefs about valid or credible evidence, encouraging a shift in power dynamics within traditional evaluation methodologies. Drawing from research on the values and practices of evaluators serving Black communities, this gathering will provide opportunities for evaluators with diverse experiences to reflect on their use of intuition in professional practice. We'll explore how “gut feelings” represent credible professional judgment developed through experience—becoming an essential but often unacknowledged tool in our toolkit. Building on Hurteau's research on expert intuition and Symonette's concept of “the self as a responsive tool,” we'll discuss how intuition helps navigate complex situations where data alone doesn't tell the whole story. This discussion will create space to explore how intuition develops over time through reflection on experiences, successes, and challenges. By sharing personal experiences and strategies, we’ll consider how balancing intuitive insights with traditional methods enhances evaluation practices.
