50: The Power of Language in Data Collection: Why It Matters
Friday, November 14, 2025
12:30 PM - 1:30 PM CST
Language plays a crucial role in data collection, shaping whose voices are heard and how findings are interpreted. In multilingual evaluation settings, translation and wording can significantly impact data quality, validity, and inclusivity. This Birds of a Feather session will explore the ethical and methodological challenges of language in data collection, including issues of meaning loss, power imbalances, and accessibility. We will discuss strategies for designing linguistically and culturally responsive surveys, working with interpreters, and ensuring accurate translation of concepts across languages. Through real-world examples, such as trauma-informed surveys, multilingual participatory evaluations, and research in post-colonial contexts, we will examine how language influences evaluation outcomes. Participants will engage in a discussion on best practices, share experiences, and explore ways to make evaluation more inclusive through intentional language choices. This session is for evaluators working in diverse linguistic settings who seek to strengthen the validity and ethics of their work.
