Integrating evaluation and the environment: Examples, challenges, and actions

Imagine a future where evaluators help communities learn, plan, and act holistically, integrating social, economic, political, and environmental considerations. The present-day polycrisis demands such integration, but we are far from actualizing it. Environmental considerations are missing from much of mainstream, traditional evaluation practice and conversely, evaluation is underappreciated and underutilized within the environmental and climate sectors. With the goal of fostering a more active network of environmental evaluators, the Environmental Program Evaluation TIG leadership team will facilitate a Think Tank to explore the twin question of why these gaps exist and what actions we can take toward better integration. Presenters will share project examples that are successfully weaving evaluation and the environment (and some near misses), then facilitate a discussion to 1) explore the gaps; 2) uplift examples, successes, and challenges from participants; and 3) identify actions we can take, individually and collectively, to integrate evaluation and environment more robustly.
