Evaluating Collectively, Understanding Individually: Indigenous Perspectives on Culture and Collective Impact
Thursday, November 13, 2025
5:15 PM - 5:30 PM CST
As a Native Hawaiian evaluator, my evaluation practice is guided by framework that incorporates the Native Hawaiian values of values of aloha aina (love of the land), kuleana (responsibility), pilina (relationships), and pono (righteousness). In multi-site evaluations with diverse organizations sharing common goals, honoring each organization’s cultural uniqueness is central to understanding their contributions to collective success. My evaluation methodology integrates culturally responsive evaluation (CRE) with Indigenous ways of knowing, employing storytelling and narrative methods rooted in traditional Hawaiian practices. Through this culturally-grounded approach, evaluations authentically capture how each organization's distinct cultural context uniquely contributes to achieving shared community outcomes. Insights from this work demonstrate that culturally informed evaluation strengthens the collective narrative, reinforcing the importance of culturally responsive practices rooted in Indigenous ways of knowing. Attendees will gain practical strategies for centering Indigenous perspectives, enhancing equity, and deepening the cultural responsiveness of evaluation practice.
