Embracing Community Responsiveness and Equity on Evaluation Teams: A Collective Journey Toward Inclusive Practices

Many evaluations impact sub-populations whose lived experiences are not shared by evaluation team members. To ensure accurate representation and meaningful interpretations, it is crucial to be responsive to the communities we serve. As an organization with diverse teams, we embarked on a journey to explore how our identities shape our evaluation work. Our goal is to enhance cultural responsiveness and promote equity in practice. Our agency’s evaluators and data scientists committed to infusing equity principles into our work. Without an existing model, we created our own approach, defining how our organization integrates culture and equity into evaluation design, implementation, and analysis. We developed a living document with culturally responsive resources and implemented activities like reflexivity exercises and equity-related discussions. Project teams also use our Health Equity Framework to inform logic models and reflection sessions. In this workshop, we share our journey, tools, and practices for building culturally responsive evaluation teams.
