Best Practices for Writing Strong Evaluation Plans for Grant Proposals

Evaluation is a required component in Request for Proposals (RFPs) issued by funding agencies, with some assigning dedicated points for the evaluation section in the overall proposal scoring. An evaluation plan with clearly defined outputs, outcomes, and measurable objectives linked to indicators greatly enhances chances of funding. Literature from extension and other sectors provides guidance on best practices for writing grants, but there are no known repositories or publications on best practices for writing evaluation plans for grants. We serve in different extension and evaluation roles and have secured several grants in the last 25 years. From our experience in successful grant writing, we will share 12 best practices for writing evaluation plans, using examples from our work, and facilitate discussion on participants’ successes and challenges related to writing evaluation plans.
