Wednesday, November 12, 2025
4:20 PM - 5:20 PM CST
Providing professional service as a journal reviewer is both essential and rewarding, yet few early-career scholars receive formal training in how to do it well. This skill-building workshop will equip participants—especially graduate students and new evaluators—with the knowledge, tools, and confidence needed to become strong peer reviewers.
Dr. Laura Peck will open the session by demystifying the review process from the perspectives of editor, author, and reviewer. She will highlight the mutual benefits that quality reviews bring to journals, reviewers, and the broader evaluation field.
Panelists will then offer concrete strategies and insights on how to review effectively: • Shannon Hitchcock will describe the key elements of a high-quality, actionable review based on her extensive editorial experience. • Michael Harnar will explain the process and benefits of co-reviewing, providing a model for mentoring and professional development. • Stewart Donaldson will explore how generative AI and digital tools can ethically and effectively support the review process without compromising critical thinking or originality.
The session will be interactive, incorporating sample reviews for consideration and opportunities to reflect on reviewing ethics and practices. Time will be reserved for audience Q&A and discussion.
Learning Objectives By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to: • Identify the elements of a high-quality peer review. • Understand the ethical and professional responsibilities of journal reviewers. • Apply techniques for co-reviewing as a method for mentorship and skill development. • Explore ways to use generative AI and other tools to support effective review writing. • Recognize how reviewer service contributes to career development and scholarly community building.
