Data Justice Consultant
data2insight
Veronica S. Smith, MS (she/they) is a data justice consultant and founder of data2insight, partnering with community organizations to make sense of data in ways that support community self-determination. As a white, queer, cis-woman, she is committed to liberation through collaborative efforts where people most impacted by systemic oppression leverage data, evaluation, and collective learning to create equitable and transformative solutions.
Veronica centers research justice through community data parties—engagement events led by, for, and with community members. These celebratory gatherings prioritize data storytelling, collective sense-making, and relationship building. For example, the South King County LGBTQIA+ Collaborative's October data party brought together survey participants and small circle members to collectively analyze findings and strategize how data could address housing and economic needs.
With 20 years advancing intersectional equity in STEM education and LGBTQIA+/Two-Spirit communities, Veronica brings deep commitment to participatory approaches to her work. She transitioned from computational neuroscience to applied research and evaluation in 2008, earning a graduate certificate in advanced study of evaluation from Claremont Graduate University before founding data2insight. Her research justice practice emphasizes that communities closest to the problems to solve must lead data collection, analysis, and action.
Veronica is a founding member of the AEA STEM Education and Training TIG and member-at-large of the LGBTQ+ Voices TIG. She actively mentors early career evaluators through GEDI, Association for Women in Science (AWIS), and Greater Seattle Business Association. With her wife Natalie, she awards an annual AWIS scholarship to undergraduate women in science, honoring the importance of supporting emerging scholars in STEM.
